What Customers Say About Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer:

This is one of those things that you might think you will never need and now you can't live without. It can fit like a pen in a pocket. I use it every day and it makes life easier and prevents food products from becoming over or under cooked. It reads instantly and has a wide temperature range. The gauge is easy to read and has different settings. The price is great on this model as well and I believe Taylor is a long established company.

Can't ask for more.Just be very careful when washing and don't wash it in the dishwasher. However, I snapped it apart at the middle seam, allowed it to dry, and it works fine again.

It is the prior version, which has a manual on/off switch and works only in F (US temp). The addition of the auto off feature is great.

I actually have the Taylor 9840. The water can leak in through the on/off switch and at other places.

The Taylor 9842 (the one listed on Amazon.com) will automatically shut off if the unit is not used for 10 minutes. This is a very nice addition. My prior version, the Taylor 9840, is not water proof.

As simple as changing the battery***.These thermometers are simple to use and accurate. The unit to too fragile to survive.***The batteries are replaced on the Taylor 9840 differently than on the 9842, so you will not be able to snap the 9842 apart like I do on the older unit.

Got this thermometer right before Christmas. I used it 3 or 4 times and now the screen is completely unreadable and filled with condensation.pretty odd for a waterproof thermometer.

I gave it two stars instead of one, because despite having a melted/warped plastic face, it still reads as long as the probe gets hot but not the whole thing. I guess for some this is common sense, but the description mentions max temp of 450, and thought that it would hold up to it.My biggest beef is that it's far from an Instant Read thermometer, as it quite slowly ticks up to the actual temperature (forcing you to keep the oven door open for well over a minute to get a reading, by which time the oven temp is no bueno at least for bread baking). I guess I missed it, but did it mention that you can't actually leave this in the food in a hot oven for more than a minute or the display malfunctions and then melts. It started working again two days after the first malfunction. If either of these two features were true, this would have suited my needs:Readout measures roast temperatures instantly (blatant false advertising)AndTemperature range of -40 to 450 degrees F (well sure the probe is okay, but the rest of the thing melts)I'm going to order one of the remote (wired) thermometers and give that a try. I wanted to use this to check the internal temp on loaves of bread to attempt experimentation to get a great crust AND a moist crumb. Hence my desire to insert the thermometer, close the door and check it a minute later. I can still use this for stove top stuff, but to me it's useless for doing oven work unless I want to remove what I'm are cooking to measure it and keep the door closed, then pop it back in when done measuring two minutes later. Not ideal for me.

I used it only three times, trying to wash it carefully afterwards, but it still ruined the display. The regular, black "home" version of this thermometer has lasted longer for me. Save your money and please do not buy it.
